Narrative

From the HGS baptism index, this would most probably be John, the son of Joseph and Mary Reeves, baptised at St John's Chapel in the Parish of St Mary, Portsea. He was born on 29 August 1810 and baptised on 7 October 1810.

John Reeves married Louisa Nicholson at the Parish Church of St Mary, Portsea, Hampshire in July 1836.

The known children of John & Louisa Reeves are ....
  1. Louisa Reeves, born c 1837
  2. Catherine Lavina Reeves, birth registered 3q 1838
  3. Lydia Reeves, b. reg. 3q 1840
  4. John Nicholson Reeves, b. reg. 4q 1842
  5. James Henry Reeves, b. reg. 1q 1846
  6. Louisa Harriett Reeves, b. reg. 4q 1847
Eldest daughter Louisa only appears on the 1841 census and the name has been reused by 1851. FreeBMD has a probable D.Reg. for a Louisa Ann Reeves recorded in June quarter 1842 within the Alverstoke Registration District.

On the 1841 census taken on 6 June, John plus Louisa and daughters Louisa (aged 4 years), Catherine (3) and Lydia (1) are living at Windmill Row in Gosport. John gives his age as 30 years old and claims he was born in county (Hampshire). He is working as a shoe maker.

At the time of the 1851 census, on 30 March, John plus wife Louisa and children Lydia (10), John N (8), James H (5) and Louisa H (3) are still living at Windmill Row. John gives his age as 41 and birth place as Gosport, Hampshire. He is now described as a Cord Wainer. It is believed that their daughter Catherine is enumerated with Ann Reeves at Rand's Court, Gosport, where she is described as a grand-daughter; but there is currently no further information to corroborate this relationship.

A decade later and the 1861 census shows John and wife Louisa living at Sea Horse Street, Gosport. Their three youngest children are still living at home. John is now 51 years old and still working as a Cordwainer.

On the 1871 census, John & wife Louisa are living on York Street. Unmarried daughters Lydia (age 30) and Louisa H (22) are living with their parents. John is now 61 years old and described as a Boot Maker. A lodger, Mary Noyer a widow aged 69 completes the household.

At the time of the 1881 census, John and his wife Louisa are still living on York Street. Their son John and his wife Frances (nee Lawler) are living with them. John is now 71 years old and described as a Shoe Maker.

On the 1891 census, John and his wife Louisa are living alone at 60 King Street, Gosport. John is now 81 years old and again described as a Shoe Maker.

By the time of the 1901 census, wife Louisa appears as a Widow at 62 King Street. FreeBMD has a strongly matching D. Reg for John Reeves aged 90 in 4q1899 from the Alverstoke Registration District.
