Probable children of John Reeves and Frances E. Hicks:
  1. Sarah Rebecca Reeves

  3. Mary Frances Reeves
  4. David Reeves, b. c1825
  5. Emily Reeves, b. c1830

John "Rieves" appears on the 1830 census in Barnwell County, South Carolina. There are two couples in the household, with the older male born 1750-1760 and the younger born 1790-1800. He sold some land in 1830 in Tatnall County, Georgia which he had been granted. By 1840, John was no longer listed on the census, but there is a household for Frances E. Reeves which matches exactly the household of John Reeves except both older males are gone. Two sons and two daughters appear to be with her. These match the apparent sons and daughters in John's household and some of the members of her household in 1850.

Frances Reeves of Barnwell District wrote a letter to the legislature for a pension that had been granted to her mother, Sarah Hicks, as a widow of a revolutionary war soldier (See John Hicks Account Audited). Her father was John Hicks who applied for a pension in 1825. Sarah petitioned in 1841 for the pension of her deceased husband and stated she was living with a widowed daughter, Frances E. Reeves, who had four orphan children. In an 1827 deed, John Hicks gave land to his grandchildren: Sarah Rebecca Reeves, Charles Benefield Reeves, and Mary Frances Reeves. (DB S, p415)

Research Notes

There is a deed from 1809 in Barnwell County in which a John Reeves sells some land. If John Reeves who is the apparent husband of Frances Hicks is the younger adult in the 1830 census (born 1790-1800), it's more likely that this deed is from another John, possibly the older man in the household. It is also interesting that this deed states he was of Barnwell District but later the deed witness testimony states that John was from St. Peter's Parish in Beaufort District. This suggests a possible connection to David Reeves who was living in St. Peter's Parish in 1820.
