Narrative

John's parents are presently unknown and little is known of his early life.

John REEVES and Sylvester GREENFIELD were married in July 1823 at the Parish Church of St Peter, Woodmancote in Sussex.
The known children of John Reeves and Sylvester (nee Greenfield) are
  1. Richard Reeves, bapt. 1824
  2. Henry Reeves, bapt. 1825
  3. James Reeves, bapt. 1827
  4. Sarah Reeves, bapt. 1829
  5. Mary Reeves, bapt. 1832
  6. John Reeves, bapt. 1835
  7. Rebecca Reeves, bapt. 1840
Their children were all baptised at the Parish Church of St Peter, Woodmancote, Sussex.

On the 1841 census taken on 6 June, John and Silvester (sic) are living at Blackstone in the parish of Woodmancote, Sussex. It is noted he is 40 years old and that he was born in county (that is to say in Sussex). He is a Journeyman Carpenter by trade. In addition to his wife, their children Henry (15), Sarah (11), Mary (9), John (6) and Rebecca (1) plus Thomas Reeves (79) complete the household.

At the time of the 1851 census, on 30 March, John and Silvester remain in Blackstone, Woodmancote, Sussex. John is now 53 and claims birth in Albourn (sic Albourne) Sussex. He is working as a Carpenter. In addition to his wife and daughter Rebecca (10) there is his grandson Henry (3), his uncle Thomas Reeves (age 86, born Poynings, Sussex) and a lodger in the household. See Research Note 1 below.

By the time of the 1861 census John's wife Silvester is a Widow. It is likely John's death is that noted by FreeBMD as occurring during the fourth quarter of 1857 in the Steyning Registration District. FamilySearch notes the burial of a John Reeves during November 1857 at the Parish Church of St Peter, Woodmancote.

Research Notes

(1) It is suspected grandson Henry Reeves is the child of John's son Henry and his wife Mary. Henry junior appears with his parent on the 1861 census. They are neighbours of John's widow Silvester at that time. (1861 census - RG9, Piece 0606, Folio 96 reverse, Page 10).

Uncle Thomas Reeves has yet to be researched and his claimed relationship to John is based on a single source, the 1851 census return.
