Narrative
The Reeves families in Wisborough Green and adjoining parishes were extensive from the late 1700's. The same names were given to cousins etc often within a months of each other. It is probable John was the son of James REEVES and his wife Sarah but see Research Note 1 below.John REEVES and Elizabeth COOPER were married at the Parish Church of St Peter Ad Vincula, Wisborough Green, Sussex during April 1822.
The known children of John REEVES and his wife Elizabeth/Elisabeth (nee COOPER) are
- John Reeves, bapt. 1824
- James Reeves, bapt. 1826
- Thomas Reeves, bapt. 1829
- William Reeves, bapt. 1831
- Francis Reeves, bapt. 1834
- Elizabeth Reeves, bapt. 1836
- Eli Reeves, bapt. 1839
- Edward Reeves, bapt. 1842
On the 1841 census taken on 6 June, John and Elizabeth are living at Newpound Common in the parish of Wisborough Green, Sussex. John, who was born in county (that is to say in Sussex) is 41 years old and working as an Agricultural Labourer. In addition to his wife, their children Thomas (12), William (9), Francis (6), Eli (1) and Elizabeth (4) complete the household.
At the time of the 1851 census, on 30 March, John and Elizabeth are again to be found at Newpound Common, Wisborough Green, Sussex. He is now 51 years old and again claims birth in Wisborough Green. He is an Agricultural Labourer. Their sons James (24), Francis (16), Eli (11) and Edward (8) complete the household.
Neither John nor his wife Elizabeth have yet been identified on the 1861 census. Their youngest son Edward is living with his brother James and family.
Elizabeth has been found on the 1871 census in the household of Francis SHURVIN and his wife Elizabeth (nee REEVES) in Woking, Surrey where her relationship is Wife's Mother and it is noted she is a widow.
It is possible John's death is that noted by FreeBMD in the Petworth Registration District during the fourth quarter of 1856, but this should be confirmed.
