John Anderson Reeves's birth date is listed in the bible of his father, Reuben C. N. Reeves. After John's brother, Tillman, had moved to Texas in March 1876, John wrote him a letter dated 16 Jul 1877. A copy was in the effects of Tillman's daughter, Alice Reeves Crow, and was transcribed by his great-granddaughter, Della Joan Smith Claybourn (spelling and punctuation are as in the original):
"Houston, Alabama July 16th 1877

Dear Brother & Sister: I will indaver to try to answer your kind missive which I received some days ago. I was glad to receive a letter from you and glad to hear that you and family was all well. This leaves me and family in good health and hope it will arrive in due time and find you likewise. Well Tillman you wanted to no what I am doing. So I think if a Ribit [rivet] don't break or a Screw come Loose I can make a living. I have got me one cow and calf and a two year old filly. And the prettiest kind of a spotted Dog. So enough of that I went and seen them men that was owing you but Did not get any money - so turn over -

So I will close by Saying write Soon and often I remain your Brother & sister affectionatly Unto Death

To Tilman Reeve & family

Bill Cole was John's brother in law, husband of his sister, Mary Ann Reeves. The Coles would also move to Texas, at approximately the same time as Tillman H. Reeves and family. The fate of Sarah Reeves, mentioned in John's letter (his and Tillman's sister) is unknown, as are that of brothers Thomas and William. "Oney Bell" is presumably Sarah's child, but no record of this family has been found. Thomas Reeves married Margaret Barton but disappears after the 1880 census. Margaret later turns up in Franklin County, AL with their sons in 1900. No record exists for William Reeves other than his appearance in the 1870 and 1880 censuses.

John Anderson Reeves remained in Winston County, Alabama until sometime between the birth of his 7th child, Franklin Reeves in January 1897 and his 8th child, Ludie P. Reeves, who was born in Pontotoc County, Mississippi in March 1900. He died in Pontotoc County on 9 Nov 1901 and is buried in Campground Cemetery there, along with other members of his family.
