John was in the 1st Alabama Infantry Regiment, Co. G, as a Private during the Civil War. He may have died near the end of the Civil War or soon after. He was admitted to Ocmulgee Hospital in Macon, Georgia on 14 Jun 1864 and returned to duty on the 17th.

His marriage record gives the additional middle name "Jackson." In addition, his Civil War Service record consistently states his name as "John A. J. Reeves."
