John was still in his parent's household in 1870. By 1880, he had married Rhoda (25), and had two daughters: R. Beatris (2) and Emma N. (1).

Widow Rhoda's death certificate states her husband's name was John DeVault Reeves.

News of the death of John D. Reeves, of Johnson City, which occurred Wednesday, has been received here and will cause a sense of sincere regret among those who knew him as one of the state’s leading citizens. The Johnson City Staff In reference to Mr. Reeves’ death, says:
"John D. Reeves, age 76 years, 2 months and 8 days, died at hie country home. “Rosemond.” four miles west of Johnson City, after a lingering illness of over a year, caused by la grippe, which finally resulted in a complication of diseases. The end came peacefully.
“The death of Mr. Reeves removes from upper East Tennessee one of her oldest and most highly respected citizens. Mr. Reeves was a plain, hightoned courteous gentleman of the old school. He lived his entire life upon his farm, where he was born. He lived without ostentation or pomp, but no man in this community had a better reputation for sterling honesty.
“No man ever builded his house upon a firmer foundation which will not be affected by the waves of time than this inestimable gentleman.
“Mr. Reeves was probably related to more prominent people who have been and are now in public life than any man in Tennessee.
“He was the son of Peter Reeves, pioneer settler of Johnson City and one of the organizers of the old E. T., V. & G. Ry; he was a brother to Col. E. C. Reeves, a brother-in-law to Judge N. A. Patterson, distinguished jurist and inventor, and at one time editor of the Cleveland Herald. He was first cousin of ex-Representative W. R. Reeves, who was for two years president of the East Tennessee Farmers’ convention, and whose wife is grand secretary of the Order of the Eastern Star. He was first cousin to Mrs. E. E. Wiley, founder of the Holston orphanage, at Greeneville. By marriage Mr. Reeves was the greatgrandson of Landon and Elizabeth Carter, for whom Carter county and the town of Elizabethton are named. Also great-grandson of Gen. Nathaniel G. Taylor. He was a son-in-law of the ex-secretary of Indian affairs. ex-Congressman N. G. Taylor; a nephew of ex-Senator -Landon C. Haynes, a brother-in-law of ex-Gov. and Congressman and Senator Robert L. Taylor; brother-in-law to ex-Congressman Alf Taylor; he was first cousin to Gov.-Elect Nat Harris, of Georgia; first cousin to Hal H. Haynes, of Bristol; a cousin to Samuel P. Carter, who had the proud distinction of being the only man in American life to reach the highest rank in the line of military service, that of major-general, also the highest in the navy, that of rear admiral. He was a cousin of S. R. Miller, president of the State Medical society. H was an uncle of Gen. Harvey H. Hannah, railwray commissioner for East Tennessee. An uncle of Atty.-Gen. Hilton Taylor, successor to Gov. Rye; uncle to Atty.-Gen. Baxter Taylor, of Oklahoma, and an uncle of Postmistress Emma St. John, of Harriman.
Mr. Reeves is survived by his wife and eight children, five sons and three daughters. Two sons. Nat and Elbert, live in California; three sons, David, Paul and John, and the youngest daughter live with their mother.
The other two daughters, Mrs. George Simcox and Mrs. J. W. Sensabaugh, live at Bull's Gap and Cleveland, this state.
The funeral was held from his late home Friday at 10 a.m., Rev. J. A. Ruble officiating. Interment at the old Reeves buryingground, two miles west of Johnson City.
