John wrote a letter home to his wife on 8 May 1864 and mentioned having to stand guard frequently and fleas and mosquitoes bothering them. He told her to "tell the boys to try & work the crop good & I think you will make enough to do on."
Civil War Records state he was captured on 15 Jan 1865 at Fort Fisher and died of bronchitis on 26 Mar 1865.
