Narrative

John William Reeves is the first known child of James Reeves and his wife Sarah (mnu, but most probably Sweetapple), who was baptised in May 1817 at the Parish Church of St Peter & St Paul at Kings Somborne in Hampshire.

A thumbnail sketch of John's life can be gleaned from his entry on the Cambridge Alumni Database website, see below.

John has yet to be identified on the 1841 census.

At the time of the 1851 census, on 30 March, John was living at Pyles House, Farley in the Parish of Farley Chamberlayne, where he was the Curate. In addition to John, the household comprises three servants, George & Ann Wilton and John Lane. John claims birth in Kings Somborne, that he is 34 years old and is unmarried. In addition to being Curate of Farley Chamberlayne, his occupation additionally records "University of Cambridge. Occupier of 80 Acres of Land - employing 3 lab(ourers)"

John's marriage to Elizabeth BAILEY is recorded by FreeBMD in the third quarter of 1851 and by the time of the 1861 census they had five children.

Known children of John William Reeves and Elizabeth (nee BAILEY)
  1. William Warwick Reeves, bapt January 1853 - died 1928
  2. Margaret Elizabeth Reeves, bapt August 1854
  3. Agnes Mary Reeves, bapt September 1856
  4. Henrietta Sarah Reeves, bapt January 1859
  5. Edward John Reeves, bapt October 1860
All their children were baptised at the parish church of St John, Farley Chamberlayne.

A decade later and the 1861 census shows John, with wife Elizabeth and their five children living at Farley Chamberlayne. John is still the Curate of Farley Chamberlayne, aged 44 and is consistent in claiming birth in Kings Somborne.

According to the Cambridge Alumni Database, John died in January 1862 at his father's residence in Kings Somborne. FreeBMD notes a corresponding death in 1q1862 in the Stockbridge Registration District.

There is a memorial to John within the Parish Church of St Peter and St Paul at King Somborne, Hampshire, which reads as follows (but see also Research Note 3 below).
