Narrative

Little is known with certainty about Joseph's early life. It is almost certain he is Joseph, son of Joseph Reeves and Elizabeth (nee BUTLER), who was baptised at Sherfield English on 18 April 1802. An Elizabeth Reeves, who is presumed to be Joseph mother was present in his household on the June 1841 census.

From the 1841, 1851, 1861 & 1871 census returns we know Joseph's wife was Sarah. It is also almost certain that is the Joseph Reeves who married Sarah HUMBY on 22 October 1834 in Sherfield English, Hampshire. An Eliza Humby was living in Joseph's household at the time of the 1841 census.

Joseph, Sarah and their first two children appear on the June 1841 census in the Sherfield English parish area of Hampshire. Joseph is shown as 35 years old and a Blacksmith. He was born in county (Hampshire).

On the March 1851 census, Joseph plus wife Sarah and their children William, Frederick, George and Albert are living in the parish of Sherfield English, Hampshire. Joseph is now shown as 46 years old and born in Sherfield English, Hampshire. He is described as a Blacksmith.

By the 1861 census, Joseph and Sarah are described as living at the Smiths Shop in Sherfield English with sons William and Albert. Joseph is aged 58, born Sherfield English and described as a Blacksmith.

On the 1881 census wife Sarah is head of household and described as a widow. FreeBMD has a possible death registration for this Jospeh Reeves in 1879 in the Romsey Registration District.
