Narrative
Children of Joseph Reeves and Joanna Phippon:- John Fry Reeves, b. c10 Oct 1780
- George Phippin Reeves, b. c20 Jun 1782
- Peter Reeves, b. c17 May 1785, bu. 7 Aug 1785
The above children are all listed in the Glastonbury, St John Parish baptismal register. Although the mother for John Fry is listed as Hannah, it appears Joanna's mother's maiden name was Fry, so this does appear to be Joanna's son.
The marriage bond for Joseph Reeves Junr. and Joanna Phippon was held by Joseph Reeves Junr and Martha Phippon, the mother of Joanna. Joseph was described as of St. Benedict.
There is a burial register for Joseph Reeves from 9 Feb 1828 at Glastonbury, St. Benedict. No other burial for a Joseph in the area is recorded so it's reasonable that this is the same individual. The age at death was 79 (b. c1749), which matches the baptismal record for Joseph from 1748 at St. Benedict, son of Joseph Reeves, rather than the one from 1752, son of Joseph Reeves.
Research Notes
There seems to be confusion concerning which couple were this parents of this Joseph. As stated above, he appears to be son of Joseph and Mary bapt. 1749. However, several history books include articles on this individual as a son of the other Joseph and his wife Sarah. This needs further investigation. For example:
Peter Reeves, a man of property, and one of the most respectable inhabitants of Glostonbury; according to the phrase of the time, "lived on his own and died on his own." The bulk of his possessions devolved on his two eldest sons, Henry and William, whose descendants are now extinct, but a small estate near Hartlake bridge, in Somersetshire, was inherited by his third son,
Joseph Reeves, who m. about 1740, Sarah daughter of Mr. William Swanton, whose only son, another
Joseph Reeves, gent. wedded Joanna, daughter of George Phippen, gent. of Northwootton, by Martha, his wife, daughter of John Fry, esq. originally of Martock, who died in 1784, aged eighty-four.
