Narrative
The 1851 census is the only source, to date, where this individual is known by the name Joseph REEVES. However, his son George was known as REEVES in his later life.It is possible this individual is the Joseph REES, son of Thomas REES and Elizabeth (mnu), who was baptised in the adjacent parish of Yaverland, IoW, in October 1789.
Known children of Joseph REES and Ann (maiden name unknown) are
- Frances Rees, bapt Nov 1824, Brading IoW, marr 1855 to Charles Warren
- George Rees, bapt Jun 1829, Brading IoW, marr 1874 to Jane Wolfe
- Elizabeth , born c 1818, marr 1838 to Charles Wearn
On the 1841 census taken on 6 June, Joseph REES is living at Rowberry (probably the place now known as Rowborough), Brading, IoW as the head of household. Living with him was Frances (age 15) and George (12). All three were born in the county (of Hampshire). Joseph was working as an agricultural labourer and his age was noted as 45.
At the time of the 1851 census, on 30 March, Joseph Reeves was haed of household living on West Street in Brading. Joesph is a widower, born Brading IoW, aged 64. Daughter Frances (age 20 sic) and son George (age 22) complete the household. Joseph is still employed as an agricultural labourer, as is his son.
A decade later and the 1861 census shows Joseph REES (age 73) living in the household of his son George and his wife (sic) Jane, although George and Jane didn't actually marry until 1874.
Joseph has not been identified on the 1871 census, and it is highly probably his is the death recorded in 1867 as Joseph REES, aged 79.
