Obituary of Joseph Reeves
Joseph Reeves was born in Montgomery County, Indiana. Aug 8th, 1840, died at Prescsott, Kan., March 27, 1918, age 77 years 7 months and 19 days. While young he moved with his parents to Ill., where he grew to manhood and was married to Matilda Mosher Oct. 30, 1860. To this union six children were born. His wife died in 1880 and he was again married on Oct. 17, 1881 to Lizzie Wallace, who with five children as follows, survive him:
Cora Ford, Lida Harkness and W. H. Reeves, of Prescott, Ella Case, of Grinnell, Ia., and G. R. Reeves, of Hutchinson, Kan., the oldest daughter died in 1903.
He moved to Iowa shortly after the war and then to Kansas in 1885, where he since resided.
In August 1862 he enlisted in Co. D. 83rd Ill., Vol. Inf., and leaving wife and baby, served to the end of the war. He was converted and joined the Christian Church in 1889 and remained faithful until the last. Like all soldiers, he was so interested in the war and longed to live untill it ended, if it was God's will. He suffered intensely at times but was most patient through it all, God knows best and called him home to claim that reward that is waiting for all those who are faithful to the end. One by one, like leaves they fall, answering the last roll.
Uncle Joe as he was most always called was loved and respected by every one that knew him, being always cheerful and jolly. The writer remembers hearing them tell of how, when he came home from the war, in 1865, as he left the train at his home, and the train loaded with soldiers moved on, the boys called back to him "good bye Joe."
The funeral service was held Friday afternoon, Mar. 29th at 2 o'clock from the M. E. church.
Joseph was buried in the Prescott Cemetery, Prescott, Linn County, Kansas.
Research Notes
Some children's records state his middle name was Robinson, but his brother Alfred's middle name was Robinson, so this needs to be verified.Sources
