Joseph is enumerated under the "free black" section of the US Census from 1820 to 1840. He appears to be deceased by 1850 as his wife Nelly appears in the household of a younger Joseph Reeves, apparently their son.

He is listed on the tax list from 1815-1819 and in 1821 in Caroline County as free negro/mulatto. In 1815 and 1816 there is also a Benjamin Reeves, and in 1821, a "Grief" Reeves, also free negro/mulatto.

Research Notes

Other children are probably Mildred Reeves who married James Taylor on 9 Dec 1846 in Caroline County and Ellen "Rives" who married John Henry Lawdon on 22 Jan 1847 in Caroline County.
