Narrative

Little is presently known of Joseph's early life. Census returns are consistent that he was born around 1826 in Birmingham, Warwickshire.

It is probable that on the 1841 census taken on 6 June Joseph is the individual enumerated in the same dwelling as Joseph and Mary Ann WHITEHOUSE, in the St Martin's parish of Birmingham, Warwickshire. See Research Note 1 below. His age is shown as 17 (or perhaps 15) and he was born in county (that is to say in Warwickshire). His occupation is Fender M(aker), the same as Joseph Whitehouse and his son John Whitehouse. Two of Joseph Whitehouse's other sons are Brass Founders.

At the time of the 1851 census, on 30 March, Joseph and his wife Eliza are living at Cold Bath Square in Clerkenwell, Middlesex. Joseph is 25 years old and claims birth in Birmingham, Warwickshire. He is employed as a Brass Founder. Eliza is 26 years old and has the same place of birth as her husband.

It is probable that Joseph Reeves marriage to Eliza is that noted by FreeBMD during the December quarter of 1850 in the Kings Norton Registration District; in which case Eliza's maiden name was either STOKES or TURNER. See Research Note 2 below.

The only known child of Joseph REEVES and Eliza (maiden name unknown) is
  1. John Henry Reeves, born c1855 in Clerkenwell or adjacent St Pancras, Middlesex
A decade later and the 1861 census shows Joseph and his wife Eliza are living in nearby Camden Town, Middlesex. His age and place of birth remain consistent and he is now working as a Brass Finisher. Eliza's place of birth is shown as Stafford, Staffordshire. Their son John completes the household.

On the 1871 census, Joseph and Eliza are living just round the corner on Great (now Royal) College Street, Camden. Other details remain consistent and again their son John completes the household.

At the time of the 1881 census, Joseph and Eliza appear in their married son John's household at Deptford, Kent. Joseph is 55 years old and was born in Birmingham, Warwickshire. He is still employed as a Brass Finisher.

On the 1891 census Joseph and Eliza are living in Islington, London. Other details remain consistent.

By the time of the 1901 census Joseph and Eliza have moved to Hornsey, Middlesex. He is 75 years old, born in Birmingham, Warwickshire and working as a Brass Finisher.

Joseph has not been identified on the 1911 census and it is likely his is the death noted by FreeBMD in the fourth quarter of 1907 in the Islington Registration District, age 82.

Research Notes

(1) The identification of this Joseph REEVES on the 1841 census is tentative. It is probable that Mary Ann WHITEHOUSE's maiden name was REEVES, since FamilySearch notes the marriage of Joseph WHITEHOUSE and MARY ANN REEVES in May 1817 in the Parish of Aston juxta Birmingham. https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NV4X-R6V Is she Joseph's elder sister?

(2) The marriage of Joseph Reeves also during the December quarter of 1850 in the neighbouring Aston Registration District can be eliminated. FamilySearch notes his marriage to Harriet BLORE in November 1850 in Aston jutxa Birmingham. https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NLWJ-1QG Joseph and Harriet can be traced on subsequent census returns in the Birmingham area.
