By 1910, Joseph E. Reeves was a widower, and he remained such for the rest of his life. Family members recalled him as a favorite bachelor uncle who told entertaining stories by the campfire. He was said at one point to have traveled to Oklahoma but to have been forced to return to Georgia after he got into trouble with natives on a reservation there.
Joseph was married briefly to his first cousin, a widow with one daughter, who predeceased him. As per the 1900 census, they had one child together.
