Narrative
Children of Joshua Reeves:- Moses Reeves, b. 14 Aug 1791
Joshua's Revolutionary War Pension application contains much information helpful in understanding his family. Joshua Reeves of Fayette, Seneca County made a declaration on 7 Jan 1843 from Seneca County, New York, which includes the following facts:
- "aged eighty five years, (all but four days) the 11th day of January instant" (placing his birth 11 Jan 1758)
- He volunteered under Capt. Jonathan Wood at the time the British landed on Ling Island (guesses Sep 1775) for one month as a private in the militia
- Later entered under Capt Henry Sparkes, marched to Elizabethtown, met up with Gen. Washington and retreated to Trenton, and continued moving from there
- Also called out spring or summer, probably 1777 under old Capt Jacob Duboy, Maj. Sparks & Gen Nocum?, to Woodbury below Philadelphia (includes additional details of service)
- "this deponent resided during the whole revolution in Salem County New Jersey, about sixty miles below Phila"
James Reeve testified in Salem County, New Jersey on 29 Feb 1843, including the following facts:
- He was "seventy eight years of age, and is a brother of Joshua Reeve of Seneca County New York"
- "Joshua is older than himself, that there was two or three children of the family between his said brother Joshua & himself"
A Moses Reeves of Seneca County, New York testified on 25 May 1844. The writing is faded, but this appears to be a son of Joshua.
Faded notes which appear to be the original notes from Joshua's interview include the following discernable bits:
- Brother James lived in ???, Cumberland Co NJ 10 or 12 mile ...where Joshua resided
- Had a sister Ruth & at one time lived with her mother in Carlton, Cumberland Co some 6 miles from her brother James - her ... 10 miles from Salem near Albany Creek some 10 miles from Salem The Cor... son? of Benjemin lived on main road toward Salem from his fathers the son of John Wood lived near Stone Neck
- Joshua Reeves resided 30 years ago in Ovid NY
- Joshua Reeves had a twin brother & sister - sister died at some 2 years old & brother 5 or 7 years ago he falling? from a ladder & died in 2 or 3 hours
- Moses son of Joshua of Fayette Seneca Co NY
- Joshua Reeve son of David Reeve was brought up at Lower Alloway Creek adjoining Stone Creek 2 miles from ?Logtown as then called Salen County NJ - oldest brother was David then 2 sisters then himself, Moses next, Daniel (died young) James to the twins who died early Joshua never married.
- James Reeves said he had no brothers or sisters living
- James wife died about 1804 & in 1843 one son & daughter living
- Moses Reeves son of Joshua lived in Waterloo - born in Augt 1791 his father resided with him & lived in Seneca County for 3 years
A second document with an earlier deposition of Moses Reeves testified again on 28th Feb 1843 including the following:
- Moses was of Seneca County, New York
- "aged fifty one years that he is a son of Joshua Reeves"
His son is listed as M. Reeves in 1840 in Fayette County, New York. There was a J. Reeves also listed the previous page but the age is too young to be Joshua. This may just be a mistake on the census-takers part.
On 24 May 1845, Moses Reeves gained administration on the estate of Joshua Reeves of Seneca County, New York.
Research Notes
Note that there were two Joshua Reeve(s) in Cumberland County who were both Revolutionary War veterans. The other Joshua remained in Cumberland County but died in 1838 so is distinguishable from this one.Sources
