On the 1860 census he appears in his parents house in Scott County, Mississippi as Jefferson Reaves (sic), age 7

N.J. left Mississippi in 1873 at age 20. He was a farmer. Married to Mary, who had a son in Texas that same year. After her death in 1890 Jeff returned to Mississippi and married Lucy on December 31, 1891, returned to Navarro County, Texas.
All 12 of his children were born in Texas.
