Oliver was in Company B, 99th Indiana Infantry during the Civil War. He enlisted 13 Aug 1862 and was mustered out 5 Jun 1865 in Washington, DC.
Oliver appears to have been visiting his brother Nevel in Indiana when the 1870 census was taken. He is in Nevel's household but Oliver's family isn't with him.
