Narrative

Children of Richard Reeves:       See Research Note 2 below.
#John Reeves, b. c1869
#James Reeves, b. c1871
#Edward Reeves, b. c1873

By the time of the 1861 census, Richard's father is deceased, but Richard does appear in a family context with his widowed mother Ann as head of household alongside his older brother James and younger brother Edward. They are living on Piercy Street, Christ Church parish, West Bromwich.

On the 1871 census, Richard again appears in a family context, with his widowed mother Ann who is again the HoH now on Wood Lane, West Bromwich. He is 21 years old and gives his place of birth as Brierley Hill, Worcestershire. He is an Iron Puddler by trade.   Also in the household are his older sister Mary (age 24) and younger brother Edward (19). All three siblings are unmarried. The household additionally includes John Reeves (age 2) and James Reeves (age 6 months).

At the time of the 1881 census, Richard is living in the household of his widowed mother Ann at 1 Piercy Street, in the St Andrews parish of West Bromwich. He is now 30 years old, unmarried and claims birth in West Bromwich. He is employed a a Puddler in (the Iron Works). Also living in the household are Ann's grandsons, John Reeves (12) James Reeves (11) and Edward Reeves (8).

He probably died by 1891 as his children are living with his brother Edward Reeves.       See Research Note 3 below.
On the 1891 census Richard is living in the household of James and Mary WHITEHOUSE on Railway Road, Withnell, Chorley, Lancashire, where his relationship is given as Brother-in-Law. Richard is 39 years old and single. He is working as a General Labourer and gives his place of birth as Brierley Hill, Staffordshire.

Richard has yet to be identified on the 1901 and 1911 census returns. It is possible his is the death noted by FreeBMD during the first quarter of 1911 in the Chorley Reg.Dist., age 61, so born around 1849 or 50.

Research Notes

(1)     There was a Richard Reeves living with John Joseph Reeves in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania in 1870. It's possible that Richard was in America briefly.

(2)     Whilst John (age 2) and James (age 6 months) were described on the 1871 census as Ann's sons, making them Richard's younger brothers, this is felt to be highly improbable. On the 1881 census John (now age 12) and James (11), along with Edward Reeves (8) are described as Ann's grandsons but from this alone it is not possible to infer which of Ann's children may be their parent.

As late as the 1891 census our subject Richard Reeves is described as single, making it highly improbable he is the father of any of them.

(3)     As now recorded above Richard has subsequently been identified on the 1891 census.

FreeBMD notes the marriage of James WHITEHOUSE and Mary REEVES during 1q1877 in West Bromwich Reg.Dist.
FamilySearch has multiple corresponding transcript entries including https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QLQH-DG6K which gives the place of Mary's marriage as the Parish Church of Holy Trinity, West Bromwich and names her father as Richard Reeves and gives her place of residence as Greet's Green.

At the time of the 1881 census Richard's sister Mrs Mary A WHITEHOUSE (nee Reeves) is living close by at 5 Piercy Street with her husband James and their first child, a son Thomas Whitehouse (age 1) (RG11, Piece 2846, Folio 35 reverse, Page 24, Schedule 107)
