Narrative
FreeBMD notes the birth of Robert Henry REEVES during the second quarter of 1864 in the Wandsworth Registration District (which includes Battersea, Surrey). He is the eldest of three known children of Robert Reeves and his wife Sarah (nee mnu)On the 1871 census, Robert is to be found in a family context at New England Street in Brighton, Sussex. In addition to his father Robert (age 38), mother Sarah (42) and two younger siblings Annie (4) and Arthur (1) the household is completed by Annie MOORE who is shown as a boarder. It is believed that Annie Moore is Robert's maternal aunt, his mother's sister.
At the time of the 1881 census, Robert has moved away from his parents home and is most probably the individual lodging with Charles TIPPER and his wife Margaret at Cuckfield, Sussex. Robert is enumerated as Robert Henry Reeves and claims he is 18 years old, born in Battersea, Surrey and is employed as a Railway Porter.
FreeBMD notes the marriage registration of Robert Henry REEVES and Ellen HERRIOTT during the first quarter of 1890 in the Brighton Registration District. This entry correlates with the information from the 1911 census that they claim to have been married 21 years.
Known children of Robert and Ellen (nee HERRIOTT) are
- Henry John Reeves, born 1890 Brighton
- Robert H Reeves, born 1896 Hastings
- Albert E Reeves, born 1898 Hastings
- Alfred George Reeves, born c1905 Hastings
On the 1891 census, Robert and his wife Ellen are living on Round Hill Street in Brighton. Robert is 27 years old and claims birth in Battersea, London. He is employed as a Railway Goods Guard. In addition to their 5 month old son Henry J Reeves, the household is completed by a boarder named Arthur J Reeves (aged 21, single who is a Railway Clerk born in Brighton). It is believed this boarder is actually Robert's younger brother.
By the time of the 1901 census, Robert and Ellen have moved to Hastings and are then living on Hughenden Road. Robert is now 37 years old, again claims birth at Battersea, London and is still employed as a Railway Goods Guard. Their three children Henry, Robert and Albert complete the household.
On the 1911 census, Robert lists his household with just their initials except his wife Ellen. The enumeration form is however signed by Robert Henry Reeves. He is now 47 years old, remains employed as a Railway Good Guard and notes his birth place as Battersea Surrey. He and Ellen have been married for 21 years and she as had six children, of whom four are still living and two have died. Their three younger sons R (Robert), A E (Albert E) and A G (Alfred George) complete the household on Plynlimmon Road, Hastings.
Robert's eldest son Henry John Reeves was killed in January 1917 when HMS Laurentic was sunk. The CWCG notes his father was "Robert Henry Reeves of Junction St, Polegate, Sussex."1
It is highly probable Robert's is the death noted by FreeBMD occurring in the first quarter of 1946. Robert H Reeves was aged 81 when his death was recorded in the Eastbourne Registration District, which included Polegate.
