Narrative

Sidney Charles Reeves is the seventh of eight known children of Edward William REEVES and his wife Emily (nee PHILLIPS). He was born in South Lambeth, London during June 1889. FreeBMD notes his birth was registered during the third quarter of the same year. Along with his younger brother Albert Victor Reeves, he was baptised at the Parish Church of All Saints, South Lambeth which was just round the corner from the family home in Hartington Road in October 1891.

On the 1891 census, Sidney appears in his parent's household at 85 Hartington Road, Lambeth. He was 2 years old and was born in South Lambeth, London.

His mother died prior to Sidney's fifth birthday and his father subsequently lost his job as a railway engine driver in August 1896. In September 1897, Sidney's father Edward was admitted to the infirmary of the Wandsworth and Clapham Union Workhouse (where he remained until mid December 1899, before being re-admitted in January 1900). At the same time, along with his brothers Walter and Albert, Sidney was admitted to the Workhouse and the three brothers were quickly transferred to the North Surrey District School at Anerley in Surrey.

At the time of the 1901 census, Sidney (along with Albert) is recorded as being a Pauper Inmate at the North Surrey District School. He is enumerated as being 10 years old, a Scholar and in common with the vast majority of other inmates, his place of birth is given as Wandsworth, Surrey (one of the the areas for which the Workhouse was responsible).

His father Edward Reeves was eventually discharged in June 1902 and Sidney (along with Albert) was discharged at the same time into his father's care.

On the 1911 census Sidney appears in the household of his married elder brother William Edward Reeves at 155 Priory Road, St Denys in Southampton, Hampshire. Sidney is 21 years old, single and working as a Locomotive Boiler Maker for the London and South Western Railway Company. His place of birth is noted as South Lambeth, London.

Sidney Charles REEVES married Ellen Francis GRIGGS in November 1912 at the Parish Church of St Andrew, Battersea. FreeBMD has a corresponding entry during the fourth quarter of 1912 in the Wandsworth, London, Registration District. Within the family, Sidney's wife was known as Nell/Nellie.

At the time the 1939 Register was prepared, Sidney and Ellen were living a 42 Farmstead Road, Lewisham, London. Sidney occupation is noted as "Boiler maker, Rivetter, Acetalyne welder and burner". In addition to Sidney and Ellen there are a further four people in the household; their son Sidney W Reeves, two redacted entries which are officially closed (as at April 2016) and lastly their son Ronald L Reeves.

Sidney's death is that noted by FreeBMD as occurring during the fourth quarter of 1977 in the Lewisham Registration District.
