Sylvester was born near Yatesville, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania in 1829. He served in the US Civil War as a private in Company A of the 152nd Pennsylvania Volunteer Regiment, 3rd Heavy Artillery from 29 Mar 1864 until 9 Nov 1865. He was also temporarily attached for a time to the 188th Regiment Pennsylvania Infantry.
In 1875, Sylvester was charged with assault and battery and found not guilty on grounds of insanity. By order of the court, he was sent to the State Hospital for the Insane in Danville, Montour County, Pennsylvania where he was diagnosed with "melancholia". He remained an inmate there until his death in 1904.

Sylvester A. Reeves
Sylvester A. Reeves died on Feb. 23 in the Danville hospital, of which he had been an inmate for 29 years. His trouble was due to the shock of canonading and exposure while he served his country for one year and eight months during the Civil War, as a member of the Third Pennsylvania Volunteers. Mr. Reeves was nearly 74 years old. He was born near Yatesville and his entire life was passed in this section. His wife survives, as also do a number of children, among them Ernest S. Reeves, of Parsonage street, with home his mother makes her home; Fred. Reeves, of Wood street; George A. Reeves, of Lake Winola; two sons and one daughter, who live in the West. The remains were brought to this city last evening, and the burial took place this morning at Lagrange, Wyoming county.
