Narrative

The 1851 census indicates that Walter was born at Douglas in the Isle of Man around 1832.
Walter Scott REEVES, the son of Lewis Buckle REEVES and Ann Jane Reeves alias (sic) SCOTT was privately baptised on 18 May 1831 and is recorded in the Parish Register of St Matheus Chapel at Braddan on the Isle of Man

On the 1841 census, Walter is to be found in his parents household on Ena Mona (now Enamona Road) in the Parish of Onchan on the Island of Man. He is 10 years of age and was born in the same island. See Research Note 1 below.

Appointed 2nd Lieutenant Royal Marines on 28 June 1849.

Attached to the Royal Marines Artillery head quarters at Portsmouth on 25 June 1850.

At the time of the 1851 census, on 30 March, Walter was living at 56 Union Street, Portsea.

Drowned in the Solent whilst crossing between Portsmouth and Ryde in a small skiff. The GRO Index to Deaths notes he was 21 years of age.

Research Notes

(1) The 1841 Census Enumeration Schedule page is subtly different. The top line of each page is printed "Island of " with the word Man then written in by the enumerator. The first of the Where Born columns reads "Whether Born in same Island" rather than "... in same County". The second Where Born column includes England as an options and reads "Whether Born in England, Scotland, Ireland or Foreign Parts"
