On the 1841 census taken on 6 June, William appears along with his wife Elizabeth and five eldest children at Mottisfont, Hampshire. Their youngest son Henry is just one month old at the time of the census. William is recorded as 32 years old and working as an Agricultural Labourer. It is noted he was not born in county (Hampshire) although the remainder of his family were Hampshire born.

At the time of the 1851 census, on 30 March, William (aged 43) along with his wife Elizabeth (40) and children George (14), Henry (9), Jane (7), Charles (3) and Sarah (11 months) are living at Oakley Cottages, Broughton, Hampshire. William's place of birth is Pewsey Wiltshire and his occupation is Farm Labourer.

A decade later and the 1861 census shows William (aged 57) with wife Elizabeth (56), their three youngest children Jane (17), Charles (12) and Sarah (10) plus a grandson William (6) living at Oakley Meadows, Broughton. William's place of birth and occupation are the same as a decade earlier. Son Henry (19) is recorded as a servant (a groom) in the nearby Pittleworth Farm working for the BAILEY family.

On the 1871 census, William (age 65) is still living at Oakley Meadows, Broughton. With him are his wife Elizabeth (63), son Charles (23, unmarried), daughter Sarah (20, unmarried) and daughter-in-law Harriett (sic) Reeves (27, married). Sarah & Harriett are both described as "Servant, home for holiday"; in 1871 Easter Sunday fell on 9 April and the census was based on residence at midnight on Sunday 2 April. Harriett's husband, William & Elizabeth's son George (34, married) is living and working nearby for the BAILEY family.

At the time of the 1881 census, William (age 76), wife Elizabeth (73) and son Charles (33) are still living at Oakley Meadows, Broughton. Both William and Charles are recorded as an Agricultural Labourer

William has died prior to the 1891 census where his wife Elizabeth is recorded as a widow. It is likely William's is the death recorded in the January to March quarter of 1882 in the Stockbridge Registration District at age 77.
