Narrative
Nothing is known of William's early life, until his appearance on the 1841 census. As yet no record of a marriage has been found, but William appears on 1841, 51 & 61 census returns as an adult in a family group. The known children of William Reeves and Mary Ann Keene(s)/Keane are
- Louisa Lavina Reeves, birth registered in 2q1838
- Elizabeth Ann Reeves, birth registered in 4q1839
On the 1841 census taken on 6 June, William is living on Lower Brook Street in the St Maurice area of Winchester Hampshire. He is the head of household and claims to be approximately 30 years old; he was not born in county. His occupation is a Coach Maker. Also in the same household are Mary (age 33), Louisa (3), Elizabeth (1) and Elizabeth (30). All four were born in county, that is to say in Hampshire.
At the time of the 1851 census, on 30 March, William and his wife Mary A. are living at 66 Lower Brook Street in Winchester. William is now 40 yeasr old and claims birth in Bristol, Gloucester(shire). He is still working as a coach maker. His wife Mary is 46 yeas old, claims birth in Winton (sic Winchester) and is working as a Dress Maker. The household also comprises daughters Louisa (age 13, born Winton) and E. (Elizabeth, aged 11, also born Winton). Elizabeth KENES (age 42, born Winton) who is described as "Wife's Sister" completes the household. Allowing for some fluidity in the surname, it would seem Elizabeth Kenes was the daughter of Thomas & Louisa Keene(s)/Keans baptised in 1809 at the Parish Church of St Bartholomew Hyde in Winchester. Thomas & Louisa also baptised a daughter Mary/Maria Ann in 1804 at the same church, which closely matches these two individuals.
A decade later and the 1861 census shows William and wife Mary Ann still living on Lower Brook Street and the composition of the household is unchanged from 1851. William is now described as a Coach Trimmer. Daughters Louisa and Elizabeth are now both working as Dress Makers and their aunt Elizabeth Kenes is noted as 51 years old.
William has not been identified on the 1871 census. His wife Mary is head of household at 8 Lower Brook in the St Maurice area of Winchester and is described as being a Widow. In addition to Mary, unmarried daughters Louisa (32) and Elizabeth (29) along with sister Elizabeth Reeves (sic, Kenes expected) age 62 are living in the same house. A strong match for William's death has not yet been found on FreeBMD.
The family group remains on Lower Brook Street, Winchester for several further decades.
Research Notes
On the 1851 census, only one other Gloucestershire born Reeves individual has been identified in Hampshire to date, Isaac Reeves.Sources
