William is the eldest of five known children of Henry Reeves and Harriet(t) (nee mnu). His baptism in October 1835 is recorded in the registers of the Parish Church of the Blessed Mary of Upham in Upham, Hampshire.

On the 1841 census taken on 6 June, William appears in a family context with his father Henry (age 27) as head of household at Slys Farm, Ashton. In addition to Henry, the household comprises Harriett (age 27), our subject William (6) and Ann (4). All four were born "in county" that is in Hampshire.

William is not found in the expected family context in 1851. His father Henry is recorded as a widower and his four younger siblings complete that household at Dundridge ¹.

It is suspected that at the time of the 1851 census, on 30 March, William appears in the household of Henry Dipnall as an Errand Boy. He is 15 years old and claims birth in Bishops Waltham, Hampshire. There is no known family connection. Owslebury is about six miles distant from Dundridge, with Upham between them.

A decade later and the 1861 census shows William's father Henry has remarried and his two youngest siblings were still living with their father ².   However, William has not been identified on this or any subsequent census returns. Nor has a probable death registration been identified, his name occurs too frequently, even in just Hampshire.
