Narrative

William REEVES, who was born around 1813 at Stansted in Kent, is the third of ten known children of William REEVES and his wife Sarah (nee WARE).

On the 1841 census taken on 6 June, William appears within his parent household at Stansted, Kent. It is noted he is 25 years old and was born in county (that is to say in Kent). It may be significant that no occupation is recorded for William unlike his father and younger brothers Amos and Jessee, all of whom are shown as Agricultural Labourers.

The marriage of William Reeves to Mary KITCHEN is noted by FreeBMD during the second quarter of 1846 in the Ecclesfield Registration District in the West Riding of Yorkshire.
The known children of William Reeves and Mary (nee KITCHEN) are
  1. Harriet REEVES, b.reg. 2q1848
  2. Esther REEVES, b.reg 1q1851
    Additionally
  3. Sarah KITCHEN, b.reg. 1q1845, aka Sarah Kitchen Reeves was brought up as the child of William & Mary.
All three births were registered in the Ecclesfield Registration District and both Harriet and Esther were registered with the surname REVEES (sic)

At the time of the 1851 census, on 30 March, William and Mary are living on George Street, in the St Johns district of Barnsley in the West Riding of Yorkshire. His age is noted as being 37 and he is working as a Coal Miner. His place of birth is given as Wrotham, Kent; perhaps he felt Wrotham might be more recognisable than the village of Stansted. In addition to his wife Mary (36, born Barnsley, Yorkshire) are Sarah (6), Harriet (5) and Esther (4, sic, but 4 weeks or months more probable). All three girls were born in Barnsley and are shown as being the Daughters of the Head of Household

A decade later and the 1861 census shows William living Burleigh Court again in the St Johns area of Barnsley He is a widower, aged 48, born at Stansted in Kent. He is still working as a Coal Miner. In addition to daughters Sarah (16), Harriet (12) and Esther (10) there is a boarder, Mary Dickson, a widow, aged 80, born Seacroft, Yorkshire. Her occupation (although indistinct) is probably Hand Loom Linen Weaver.

William has not been identified on the 1871 census. It is possible his is the death noted by FreeBMD during the first quarter of 1863 in the Barnsley Registration District.

Research Notes

(1) Sarah married using the name Sarah Kitchen REEVES in 3q1867 and has been identified on the 1871 Census as Mrs Sarah Shepherd.

Harriet is probably the individual enumerated as Harriet REAFES, a Lodger in the household of Mary A PARKIN at 89 Lockwoods Row in Kimberworth (WRY). There is also a daughter Mary E REAFES, aged 16 days. FreeBMD has the registration of the birth of Mary Eleanor REEVES during 2q1871 in the Rotherham Reg.Dist. Harriet REEVES marries William HAGUE during 1q1872 in the Wortley Reg.Dist. William & Harriet HAGUE plus daughter Mary Elonar (sic) HAGUE and five younger Hague siblings appear on the 1881 census in Chapeltown, Ecclesfield, WRY.

Esther Reeves appears as a Servant in Sheffield on the 1871 census and married William James SMALLRIDGE during 2q1874.
