William Charles Reeves is the oldest of four children born to William REEVES and his wife Mary Jane (nee FORD). His birth was registered during the first quarter of 1870 in the South Stoneham Registration District of Hampshire. He was baptised in April 1870 at the Parish Church of Holy Trinity in (Millbrook, Hampshire.

A year later, on the 1871 census, William Reeves appears with his mother and father on Paris Street in Lambeth, Surrey. He is one year old and was born at Nursling, Hampshire. His Uncle George and family was living at the same address.

At the time of the 1881 census, William C Reeves is the oldest of four children in his parent's household on Pembroke Place, Lambeth. He is now 11 years of age, was born in Hampshire and is a scholar.

On the 1891 census William is no longer living in his parent's household and he has yet to be positively identified elsewhere.

FreeBMD notes the marriage of William Charles REEVES and Emma Anne WELLS during the third quarter of 1891. FamilySearch has a marriage register transcription suggesting the marriage took place in September 1891 and names the groom's father as William REEVES.
The known children of William Charles Reeves and Emma Ann(ie) (nee WELLS) are
  1. Arthur William Reeves, b.reg. 1892
  2. Walter Charles Reeves, b.reg. 1894
  3. George Herbert Reeves, b.reg. 1897
  4. Victor Horace Reeves, b.reg. 1901
  5. Edward Henry Reeves, b.reg. 1903, d.reg. 1q1904
  6. Ceclia Annie Reeves, b.reg. 1905
  7. Sydney Harold Reeves, b.reg. 1908
  8. Frederick Lewis Reeves, b.reg. 1912
All the birth registrations are recorded with the Mother's Maiden Name as being WELLS and were registered in the Lambeth Registration District.

By the time of the 1901 census, William and Emma are living on Royal Street, Lambeth, London. He is 31 years old, claims birth in Hampshire and is employed as a Stoker. In addition to his wife Emma A (age 29, born Westminster), the household comprises their sons Arthur C (sic) (8, Lambeth, School), Walter (6, Lambeth, School), George (3, Lambeth) and Cyril (sic) (1 month, Lambeth). See Research Note 1 below.

On the 1911 census William and Emma are again to be found on Royal Street in Lambeth, London. He is now 41 years old and claims birth at Nursling, Hampshire. He is employed as a Fitters Labourer at a Candle Factory. His wife Emma Ann Reeves is 39 and notes they have been married for 19 years and that she has had seven children, six of whom are still surviving and that one has died. Their six surviving children complete the household.

Neither William nor Emma have been identified on the 1939 Register. FreeBMD notes the death registration of a William C Reeves, age 68, in the Lambeth Registration District during the third quarter of 1938, which is a strong match for this individual. See Research Note 2 below.

Research Notes

(1) On the census taken of 31 March 1901, the name of William's one month old son seems to be written as Cyril. However it is partly obscured by a subsequent line drawn vertically on the page. But it is clearly not Victor or Horace, the names his birth was subsequently registered under during the second quarter of 1901 in the Lambeth Registration District.

(2) This entry only appears on the FreeBMD Index to Deaths. As of 26 May 2023 there is not a corresponding entry on the newer GRO Index to Deaths.
