William Pouder Reeves and his brother Peter Miller Reeves built Wheatland, a house built in 1838 in the Knob Creek Historic District, near present-day Johnson City. Also known as the William P. Reeves House or the Clark House.

William and Peter were both trained as carpenters, and traveled through North Carolina taking commissions for important buildings, such as the Guilford Courthouse. The exceptional carvings and woodwork at Wheatland were undertaken by William.

Both brothers married daughters of Valentine DeVault.

The brothers were living together in 1840 in Washington County, Tennessee as the census noted the heads of household as "William & Peter Reeves."

In 1852 the East Tennessee & Virginia Railroad was incorporated, William P. Reeves was part of a syndicate formed by several Washington County citizens organized to raise the final $300,000 needed for the charter to become valid. This was done to save the charter since the stock in the road was required to be taken in a certain time.

William P. Reeves filed an Oath of Allegiance on 21 Aug 1865 in Washington County, Tennessee. He was indicted for treason for his participation in the Confederacy.

William P. Reeves, longtime member of the M.E. Church, South, died at his home, Wheatland, near this place, on the 20th inst., in the 83rd year of his age. One of his sons, Col. E.E. Reeves, is a prominent lawyer of Jonesboro: another son is Dr. R.H. Reeves, leading dentist of Ashville, N. C. One of his daughters married Rev. Dr. D.R. McAnally, Editor of the St. Louis Christian Advocate, another married Dr. E.E. Wiley, former President of Emory and Henry College, VA, now President of Martha Washington College.

Daughter Adelaide is buried in the Devault Cemetery, Washington County, Tennessee.
