Captain George Rives was born January 10, 1769, in Sussex county, Virginia, and executed his will in that county in 1840 where he made his home and where he was a prominent planter of ante-bellum days. In 1787 he qualified, as "George Rives, Jr.," as a Lieutenant of the Sussex militia, and was subsequently promoted to a captaincy, resigning the latter office in February, 1805. He also served for a time as sheriff of Sussex. Upon the death of his first wife, Patsy Goodwin, he married Mrs. Sarah (Williamson) Collier, or Colyer. of South Carolina.
