From Reliques of the Rives:
Colonel George Stith Rives was born in 1832 and resided in Nansemond county. He enlisted as a private in 1861 and served in Co. C, 5th Va. Cavalry, C. S. A., and subsequently as a 1st Lieutenant in Co. K, 13th Va. Cavalry. At the Battle of Gettysburg he commanded a regiment, of which there is said to have remained only one survivor after the engagement beside himself. During the closing days of the war he was Provost Marshal on the staff of Gen. W. H. F. Lee. Two negro body servants served him faithfully throughout the war. Col. Rives died in Portsmouth on February 12, 1887. His first wife was a Mrs. Williamson (born Ellis) ; his second, Virginia (daughter of Robert J. Saunders), born November 30, 1840, died December 9, 1906, who was educated at the C. M. and F. C. Institute.

Note from Reliques: son Robert "studied law at Richmond College; became a successful criminal lawyer in Richmond, Va., where he attained local renown as an orator and where he d. unmarried Apr. 1912." He doesn't appear to have married or had children.
