George Washington Rives was born at Rivesville, Illinois, May 13, 1837, and enlisted during the War Between the States on May 7, 1864, in Co. C, 133rd Ill. Inf., serving as a sergeant in the Union Army until September 24, 1864. He married January 26, I860, Jemima Deal. Mr. and Mrs. Rives began their married life under pioneer conditions in Macoupin county, Illinois, nine miles northeast of Greenfield, where he became an extensive landowner and successful stock raiser. He and his wife, who were widely known and highly respected in their community, were active workers in the Asbury Church of their neighborhood, in the shadows of which they are buried.
