Green Rives was named in the Camden District SC 1783 will of his father, William Rives, Sr.

From Reliques of the Rives:
born January 10, 1763, in Virginia, and "departed this life Oct. 26, 1812, in Columbia, S. C," according to a bible record in the possession of a descendant. That he saw service as a soldier in the Revolutionary War is confirmed by the payment to him on August 29, 1785, by the State of South Carolina, of £35:8 for 265 days duty in 1780/1 (Salley, Stub Entries, p. 137). In 1790 he was residing in Richland county, S. C, the owner of three slaves. His home was "below Columbia on land now belonging to Dr. Hubert Clayton." The family graveyard is represented as being enclosed in an iron fence but as having no tomb stones to furnish the names of the occupants.1 In 1794 he was Captain of a company of militia in South Carolina, according to a return made by him on September 11, 1794, to Major Hicks Chappell, of which the following is a copy made from the original roll, believed to be in the handwriting of Green Rives, and which is now in the possession of Mr. James H. Rives, of Mansfield, La. [omitted]

Green Rives married February 29, 1790, Mary Ridley Jones, born March 5, 1767, in South Carolina, died March 27, 1843, in Alabama, daughter of Darling (d. in Charleston, S. C.) and Susannah Jones. She is buried in the Rives' burial ground at Collirene, Lowndes co. Ala., where the following inscription commemorates
her memory:

Sacred to the memory of Mary Ridley Rives, daughter of Darling and Susannah Jones, who died at Collirene, Alabama, March 27, 1843, aged 74
years and 22 days, and Relict of Green Rives who died Oct. 24, 1812, at his residence in Richland District, South Carolina, aged 49 years, 9 months and 14 days. He was a native of Virginia and she of South Carolina. She was an exemplary member of the Baptist Church for the last fifty-eight years of her life. Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord.

Green Rives, Sen., died intestate and an inventory of his property was presented to the court in Richland county, S. C, February 10, 1813, by his administrators, Green Rives, Jr., and Mary Ridley Rives.


His wife Mary was listed in Richland County, South Carolina in 1820 and 1830, and in Lowndes County, Alabama in 1840.
