From Reliques of the Rives:
was born August 28, 1801, in South Carolina, and "died suddenly at his home near Benton, Lowndes co. Ala., Sunday night, Sept. 30, in the 76th year of his age. He came to this county (Lowndes) about forty years ago. He was not a member of the church, but had great reverence for it and an unwavering faith in the Gospel as understood by Baptists. A few weeks before his death he told me he would not live long, and was trying to be prepared for the summons. 'Be ye also ready' was constantly in his mind. A good citizen, friendly neighbor, honest man, kind husband and father has passed away. I thought him a converted man but he did not see fit to make a public profession." (From Obituary) Mr. Robert Rives was a charter member of the Benton (Ala.) Lodge of Masons and was a man of considerable wealth at his death. For the furtherance of his children's education Mr. Rives caused to be built a schoolhouse on his plantation, hired a teacher, and invited his neighbors to send their children to this private school which he maintained at his own expense. He married May 29, 1823, in Fairfield District, S. C, Amelia (b. Dec. 21, 1804, d. Mch. 13, 1883), daughter of William and Ann (Perry) Harrison.
Robert Rives received $208.75 from the estate of Reuben P. Harrison. John G Rives received $208.42.
