He attended the district schools and married in 1876, Laura Otey Shackleford, daughter of Dr. Charles Shackleford, a physician of Hopkinsville, Ky. After his marriage he settled on a part of his father’s estate and engaged in farming. Mrs. Rives and two of her children died in the summer of 1882. Her husband accompanied the American forces to Cuba in I898, was stricken with yellow fever while there, and died aboard a transport en route to New York and was buried at sea.
