From Reliques of the Rives:
Dr. John James Rives was born in Brunswick county, Virginia, attended Emory and Henry College from Brunswick county during the session, 1848-49, and afterwards was graduated from the University of Virginia in medicine, taking later a post-graduate course in surgery at the University of Pennsylvania. During the war he served in the Confederate Army with Co. A, 5th Battn. Va. Inf., and with Co. H, 53rd Va. Inf. After the war he practiced medicine until his death in 1881 at City Point, Virginia. Dr. Rives married, first, Carrie Brackett, of Richmond, Virginia, but had no issue by her. He married, 2nd, Jane Sophia Archer, daughter of Cadmus and Jane Sophia (Gilliam) Archer, of Chester field county, Virginia, and had issue (see above)
