John Rives married Sarah Gee, daughter of Captain James Gee, who was born in 1694, and died October 28, 1759, in Sussex county, Virginia, by his wife, Boyce Scott, daughter of John Scott, of Prince George county, Virginia, who died in 1724.

Reliques mentions a deed form Sussex County which shows Sarah to be the daughter of James Gee. It begins "James Gee late of the County of Sussex, Gentleman, deed did in his lifetime by parole give unto his granddaughters Rebecca and Winnifred daughters of John Rives and Sarah his wife, daughter of the said James Gee..." (DB D, p291)

From the Sussex County, Virginia Order Book 1757-1761, p89, from the October term court form 1757:

James Gee Gent is by the Court appointed guardian to John Rieves infant orphan of John Rieves deced whereupon he with Charles Gee junr his security enter'd into acknowledged their bond in $1000 penalty for (?) performance of that trust.

Research Notes

Reliques states that Rebecca was born 19 Oct 1746, Winifred on 4 Jan 1748, and John on 7 Mar 1750. However, he appears to have misread this. In John Bennett Boddies abstraction of the data from the parish records, John and Rebecca are listed with the same birthdate, 7 Mar 1749, with parents John and Sarah Rives. However Winney Rives is listed as the daughter of John and Eliz. Rives and born 4 Jan 1747. Rebecca's birth entry was sponsored by a Charles Gee along with Josh. Tatum and Judieth Rives. This fits with the will of James Gee which names his granddaughter Rebecca daughter of John and Sarah Rives. However the will also names Winnifred as a granddaughter. Either the parish record is wrong or James Gee was counting Winnifred as his granddaughter since she was the daughter of John Rives. A 1771 deed dealing with her share in the estate also names her as a daughter of Sarah.

Reliques identifies the son John as John Rives who moved to Northampton County, North Carolina. Although in need of further research, this does to appear to be the case. That John is associated with the family of William Rives who moved to North Carolina as well.
