Peter Gillum Rives, Jr., is described as a man of very attractive personality, of exceedingly polished manners, and greatly beloved by his family and friends. He was throughout his life a devout Episcopalian. "My father, Peter G. Rives," his daughter Miss Lucy Allison Rives writes, "was greatly admired by my mother’s people and they, as well as my mother, often talked to me of him, describing him as a man of ability and of wonderfully courteous and beautiful manners. My mother also told me of his affection for his Virginia kin and how, as long as he lived, he went each year to visit
at the home of John Cabell [Cook] Rives. * * * My father died while still in his thirties leaving my mother with three small children to rear."
