From Reliques of the Rives:
Peter Richard Rives was educated at Louisburg, North Carolina, and became a successful planter in Pitt county, contributing generously to the cause of the Confederate States. He suffered, like so many others, severe losses as a result of the war, notably through the destruction of his cotton, and a steamboat, The Cotton Plant, in which he was interested and which plied the Tar river. He married Mary Long, of Edgecomb county, N. C.
