Thomas Francis Rives, born March 18, 1839, attended Emory and Henry College, 1856-57, and upon the outbreak of war enlisted as a private in Co. I, 3rd Virginia Cavalry. He was county surveyor of Dinwiddie from 1874 to 1900, residing at “Cedar Green” and later at “Gunn’s Hill” where he died May 23, 1900. Mr. Rives married February 15, 1868, Margaret Minerva White, daughter of Joseph Duke and Emily Margaret (Thompson) White, of Petersburg.

He is Extremely Ill at His Home in Dinwiddie,
PETERSBURG, VA., May 23. - Special. - Mr. Thomas L. Rives, one of the most prominent citizens of Dinwiddie county, is extremely ill at his home, at Gunn's Hill. He suffered an eruption of a blood vessel on the brain about eight weeks ago, and crebral complications have now arisen. Dr. R. D. Ilwaine, of Petersburg, has been with Mr. Rives all day. He is not expected to live through the night.
