From Reliques of the Rives:
William Cabell Rives succeeded to the office of county surveyor of Dinwiddie in 1900 upon the death of his father and has filled the office to the present time. In 1925 he was appointed by Gov. Trinkle a member of the State Board of Agriculture. Mr. Rives has taken a prominent part in the affairs of his
community, serving as Chairman of the Democratic County Committee of Dinwiddie from 1911 to date. He is a Vestryman and Treasurer of the Church of the Good Shepherd near McKinney, Virginia. Mr. W. C. Rives, who was born at “Gunn’s Hill,” married November 27, 1901, Alice Maud Tompkins, daughter of Clarence Wharton and Sallie Fitzhugh (Royston) Tompkins, of Ormsby, Caroline county, Va.,
