Narrative

Children of William Rives and Jane Cunningham:
  1. Susan E. Rives, b. 1829, m. Levi Reuben Thompson, d. Ware County, Georgia
  2. Ann Rebecca Rives, b. 1832, m. William D. Smith on 5 Dec 1848
  3. William Jasper Rives, b. 18 Jan 1834, d. 13 Aug 1914
  4. Margaret Rives, b. 29 Aug 1836, d. 2 Apr 1914, m1 John K. Knowles, m2 Irvin Booth
Jasper and Margaret were minors at William Rives death and a guardian was appointed for them.

1811 Deed records in Mecklenburg County regarding the estate of Robert Hobbs of Chatham County for which William Rives was the administrator name Elsey Hobbs as the wife of William Rives.

Documents in the Warren County NC estate file of William McGuffey Rives detailing distributions to the estate of William Rives of Mecklenburg County, North Carolina verify that he was the son of William McGuffey Rives and Mary Catherine Turner. There is also a notation in a settlement of William Rives estate in Mecklenburg dated July 1850 which mentions William and Mary Rives of Warren County and shows an amount received from their estates.

Hannah "Reaves" was listed on records for her father, Daniel Smith's estate in 1822 and signed the quit claim deed with other legatees giving their portions of his estate to their mother, Elizabeth. Hannah was definitely deceased before October 1835 for she is not included in estate documents executed by all of her siblings at that time.

Hannah apparently died before 1824 for William Rives was remarried to Jane Cunningham in July of that year. William Rives is the only "Reeves" individual living in Mecklenburg County during the years 1820 to 1850.

The recording of a receipt by William Rives for "calling sale" in January 1848 for the sale of the estate of Isham Fuller in Mecklenburg County appears to be the last record making reference to him.

After William Rives death, his widow and all of his children moved to Georgia where they are found in the 1850 census of Ware County living in the home of Ann and William D. Smith. By the 1860 census most were living in Clinch County, Georgia. Jane Cunningham Rives died there in 1883.
