In 186 1 he volunteered for duty in the Confederate Army and served about eighteen months as a private with Co. E, 26th N. C. Inf., taking part in the battle of Malvern Hill. He subsequently hired a substitute and received an honorable discharge. Mr. Rives, who was always considered a man of superior mental capacity and ability, married October 27, 1868, Eliza Henry Harris.
