From Reliques of the Rives:
William Alston Rives received a common school education and was a farmer throughout his life, serving for a time also as postmaster. Born October 8, 1840, at Pedlars Hill, Chatham county, North Carolina, his life was largely spent in the vicinity of Siler City, N. C, where he died August 13, 1917. In 186 1 he volunteered for duty in the Confederate Army and served about eighteen months as a private with Co. E, 26th N. C. Inf., taking part in the battle of Malvern Hill. He subsequently hired a substitute and received an honorable discharge. Mr. Rives, who was always considered a man of superior mental capacity and ability, married October 27, 1868, Eliza Henry Harris.
Death Certificate names parents as W. A. Rives and Lydia Reed. It also states she died in Hickory Mountain township, which is right by Siler City, where Reliques states she died.
