William Caldwell Rives, who was born August 13, 1844, at Charleston, South Carolina, entered Kings Mountain College at Yorksville, S. C. in 1858 and was a student there until the outbreak of war in 1861 when he volunteered for service. During the campaign in Virginia of '61 he contracted pneumonia and was sent home to die but recovered and reenlisted in the 25th S. C. Infantry. He was subsequently taken prisoner at Fort Fisher and served six months in a Federal prison at Elmira, N. Y. In 1875 he removed to Florida where he took an active part in civic and state affairs, and was in 1889 elected to the Florida Legislature.
