Narrative

The Alumni Oxoniensis has the following to say about Richard:
Ryves, Richard (Rives), s. Richard, of Childe-Okeford, Dorset, gent HART HALL, matric. 7 Nov., 1634, aged 16.

Richard gave a nuncupative will on 20 Dec 1640 in which he described himself as of the "parish of Saint Peeter neere Paules wharfe London gentleman" and it was proved 30 Jun 1641. He mentions "his then mistreis Elizabeth Rives," "his mother Edith Rives," and "his fower sisters," although he did not name the sisters.

From Reliques of the Rives:
Following the injunction of his father that he be "breed up ... in learning and other education," he matriculated at Hart Hall, Oxford, 7 Nov. 1634, aged 16, as the "son of Richard Ryves of Childe Okeford, Dorset, gent." (Foster). He died in 1641, leaving a nuncupative will (P. C. C. 85 Evelyn) dated 30 December 1640 and proved 30 June 1641, as follows: Memorandum that now uppon Friday December 20th 1640 A. D. or there abouts Richard Rives of the parish of St. Peeter neere Paule's Wharfe London, gentleman, being sicke of bodie but of perfect mind and memorie did then send for his then mistress Elizabeth Rives to come unto him and in her presence and other witnesses whose names are underwritten did declare his last will ... by word of mouth viz that whereas he had a peece of land of the value of £28 his will was that his mother Edith Rives should have it during her life and after her decease that all the rest should be equally divided between his four sisters. There being present Mrs. Elizabeth Ryves, Edmond Percivall and Elizabeth the nurse keeper and others.

Research Notes

There was a burial at St Peter Paul's Wharf on 26 Dec 1640 which states: "Richarde Reefs Clark to ? Reefs Buried under the greate stone by the Church dore." This could be just a misspelling of the name. However, his status of "gentleman" as given in his will may not fit well with the occupation of clerk.
