Narrative

Children of Robert Ryves and Mary/Marie Layne:
  1. John Ryves, b. c1592
  2. Johan Ryves, b. c1594
  3. Robert Ryves, b. 1597

The visitations of Dorset from 1623 indicate that Robert was of Blandford in Dorset, the 2nd son of Robert of Randleston. He married Maria daughter of Mr. Jordaine of Lime in County Dorset. The visitations list only one of the children:
  • Rob'tus filius et haeres aet. 24 annoru' 1623. (Robert son and heir. 23 in the year 1623)

Note that the visitations give in incorrect age for his son Robert. The will of his father from 29 Jan 1596/7 mentions "the childe which my saide wife now goeth withall." Robert died within a month after and the son must have been therefore born in 1597. Therefore the son Robert was about 26 at the time.

Robert wrote his will on 29 Jan 1596/7 and it was proved 25 Feb 1596/7. He mentions wife Marie, children John and Johan, and his brother John Rives of Randleston. A Richard Rives witnessed the will.

From Reliques of the Rives:
Robert, born 4 June 1567, second son of Robert Ryves, of Randleston, settled at Blandford where he became a merchant and where he died in 1596. There is no other testimony for him than his will:
P. C. C. 16 Cobham.
Dated 29 Jan. 1596.
Proved 25 Feb. 1596.

I, Robert Rives of Blanford Forum, merchant, beinge sicke and weake in bodie but of good and perfect remembrance for which I give unto God Almightie most humble and hartie thanks . . . bequeath my soule unto almightie god hopeinge through the merritts and bitter passion of our Lorde and saviour Jesus Christe his onelie begotten sonne to be saved and my bodie to be buried in the Cathedral church of our blessed Ladie in Sarum. ... I give unto Marie my well beloved wife and unto John Rives and Johanne Rives my sonne and daughter and unto the childe which my said wife now goeth withalle all my goodes and chattells whatsoever to be trulie valued and equally by even parts divided amongst them except my musket which I give unto my loveing brother John Rives of Randleston co. Dorset, gent. whom I make my full executor. In witness whereof we William Southe, doctor in divinity, Richard Goldstone and Richard Rives, gent. have hereunto set our hands and seals the 29th day of Januarie in the 39th yeare of the reigne of our sovereigne Ladie Elizabeth by the grace of God Queene of England, ffraunce and Ireland, defendresse of the faithe.

He married Mary or Marie, daughter of John Layne, of Lyme, co. Dorset, according to Hutchins, and had by her: (see above).

Research Notes

Note that Reliques states he married Mary Layne. However, the visitations state she was Mary Jordan/Jordaine.
