History

Edgefield County was formed in 1785 from the southern section of Ninety-Six District and is bordered on the west by the Savannah River. During the eighteenth century, a group of German Palatines settled what was then known as Londonborough Township, which is now a part of Edgefield County. Edgefield was the site of several Revolutionary War skirmishes.

Modern Day Adjacent Counties

It is bordered by Saluda, Aiken, McCormick and Greenwood counties as well as the Georgia counties Richmond and Columbia.
