Narrative

Alfred's birth was registered in London using the anglicised surname Schlapfer. He was the second of ten children born to his parents, Alfred and Annie. He was baptised at the Parish Church of St Botolph, Aldersgate, London on 1 October 1899 and his date of birth was recorded as 8 August 1899. At that time the family were living at 9 Goswell Street, London.

Following the family's move from London to Southampton some time between 1903 and 1906, it seems the family adopted his mother's maiden surname of Newman as the family surname.

As Alfred Edward Newman he married Edith May REEVES during the third quarter of 1927 in the Southampton Registration District.

Like his father, Alfred was a hairdresser by trade.
